Prösels Castle

Top Floors

The tower in the middle of the room ist the keep from the 3rd century. On the east side of the wall you con see the oldest fresco of the castle. It was painted in 1467 and was originally a sundial. The roof was built only 150 years ago, so this old fresco was saved.
The south-east wall of this room shows the coat of arms of the Lords of Völs. Leonhard's ancestors only had the rose or the cross on their coat of arms. Leonhard had become rich and powerful and therefore wanted a more splendid coat of arms. During the war against Venice Leonhard met Arturo Colonna, an impoverished member of the Roman aristocracy. He sold his name Colonna and the columns ( Colonna=coumn ) on his coat of arms to Leonhard. From that time on Leonhard's coat of arms also showed the columns and he called himself ''Leonhard Colonna, Lord of Völs''.
