Prösels Castle - picture of Chapel of St. Anna

Prösels Castle

Chapel

The chapel was built during Leonhard's time, some 500 years ago. The most valuable objects are the wings of the altar, which were painted by Hans Schäufelein, a scholar of Albrecht Dürer, who was one the greatest artists of the 15th century in the German speaking countries. The painting in the middle of the altar shows Leonhard of Völs in full armour. But it is only a copy. The original painting, which hung here in Leonhard's time is now exhibited in the Germanic Museum of Nuremberg. Leonhard's first and second wife can also be seen in the picture.
In Leonhard's time there were frescoes on the walls of the chapel. During the Plague in 1630 the walls were whitewashed in order to disinfect the chapel. In recent years there were attempts to bring aut the frescoes again, as you can see on the ceiling. But they are in very gad condition, therefore it was decided to leave the other frescoes underneath the whitewash coat.
Today you can get married in the chapel and afterwards you can celebrate your wedding the rooms we are going to see now.
